What To Do Wednesday: T-Shirt Scarf

by Kristin on January 18, 2012

If you are anything like me, you have gone through your house in PURGE mode for the New year! While I usually take everything to the local thrift store for a tax deduction, this year I have really been trying to focus on re-using and re-purposing household items.

One of my least favorite of these chores is cleaning out closets and drawers. Oh, I know some of those clothes have gone un-worn for years, but sometimes the emotional attachment to clothing is too strong a bond to break!

Since we are a jeans and t-shirt kind of family, we tend to have lots of worn shirts in our purge pile each year. Over the next few weeks, you will notice that I am doing several projects with those purged clothing piles. If you start getting sick of the clothes upcycles, let me know and I will switch it up a bit for you!

So lets begin with the basic supplies needed for this project. You are going to LOVE this… a T-Shirt and a pair of scissors!

Next, lay your t-shirt out on a flat surface and cut the shirt in half under the armpits (or in my case, the logo of my shirt)

You will no longer need the top of the shirt, so put it aside for future use. I cut the bottom hem off the shirt and started cutting upwards into strips.

Next step is to gently pull each strip to stretch it a bit… DON’T pull too hard, or you will pull it right off the shirt! LOL!

Once you have those all pulled, it will look something like this:

Since this is an adult shirt, I had plenty of room to loop this around my neck twice for a layered effect!
