7 Quick Takes: August 27, 2010 (Vol. 1)

1. This week I decided that I need to be more serious about my blog and my business in general. I think because this year has been the most insane year of my entire life, I have been more inconsistent than ever! I realized long ago that God is not my co-pilot. He is my Pilot! I have taken a back seat to His Will in my life, and that is all there is to it!

2. I am officially a guardian to a 17 year old girl! Most my friends think I am insane to bring my son’s girlfriend into our home to finish her Senior year at our little school, but please refer back to #1. This has not been something we have walked into lightly. We have been weighing and praying on this issue. Not only is this gal stunningly beautiful, but she is an amazingly talented artist who will one day soon have an online store of her own. And… I am no longer the only female in this house! God brought her into our lives, and I take that seriously. We honestly live under the thought that it takes a village to raise a child, so regardless of who has the title of “mom” or “dad”, they all belong to our village and will be treated as such.

3. School orientation this week had me a bit flustered. For those of you who know me, you will know that I do not like stress. So far we still do not have a class schedule for Rachael. Zane however was able to finally get his classes figured out today. As for my little man Keegan… so far no word on an Open House at his school because of a water main break (at this point I am just praying that it will be safe for him to attend said school when September 7th comes around). We did find out his teacher for the year and we were able to finally school supply shop with a provided list of supplies.

4. I am SUPERWOMAN! Ok… not really, but this week had me feeling pretty mighty! I have been not only working my garden like a super woman, but I have also participated in building a shed! With my very own two hands! Of course, I didn’t do any of it alone, or it would have looked like the Leaning Tower of Pisa. My dad, who lives with us, has been working on this shed for days now, and I have been able to help quite a bit with it! I feel so accomplished lately!

5. Gardening rocks! I had been eating off of my sugar snap peas for weeks, but this week I plucked a few tomatoes and a cucumber for a salad this week! I had given into the fact that my watermelon and cantaloupes were a lost cause, so I pulled those up and replanted some more sugar snaps. BUT, if I find those squirrels that are raiding my corn, watch out! I will not only be a Superwoman, but I will also be a woman on the edge! (Reminds me of Donkey from Shrek! But I am not a donkey, so I cannot say, “I am a donkey on the edge!”)

6. Speaking of squirrels, I have begun to love the idea of our funky squirrels in our neighborhood. Unless the cute ones I love are the one’s raiding my garden. If that is the case, then I hate squirrels! I had just taken for granted that a squirrel was a squirrel was a squirrel. Growing up in Wisconsin, we had gray squirrels. I had heard tales of the dreaded red squirrel, but had never seen one. Imagine my surprise when I realized that my little neighborhood has neither red nor gray squirrels. We have black squirrels! And not only just black squirrels, but black squirrels with a little white tuft at the ends of their tails! Oh, there are some just black all over, but many of them just come from that white tuft family. And occasionally, I have even spotted a half black, half red squirrel. Honestly! From his head to his belly button was black, and like someone had drawn a line down his middle, from his belly to his feet were red! I think I have just typed the word Squirrel today more than I ever have in my entire life combined!

7. I have actually started to look forward to my children starting school. As a stay at home mom, I love being available to the kids whenever they need me, but this year is different. I am excited more for myself this year than for them! I have thoughts of grandeur when it comes to working on projects that I have been slacking on while enjoying the kids this summer. September 7th will be here before I know it, and I am sure when I am home, all alone all day, I will quickly be changing my mind, but for now I am excited!

Reading your blog post recently about being excited about your accomplishments lead me to be proud of this myself! Yes I know, almost anyone can screw a few screws into some wood (well, apparently with the exception of Zane), but I really took some pride in helping with that project.

It was fun to work on, though while I was in the garage yesterday spray painting on some things, I wondered to myself, “Self, why after building that beautiful shed, is my husbands motorcycle in the garage and not in its new home?”
